Yes COLOR is important , I can help you with that. Yes Drawing is important and I can help you with that too. I can also help you to learn how to talk about art and how you want to present your absolute best side.

I’ve been in numerous shows and have written and Illustrated children’s books. I’ve lectured at many schools about making my children’s book Snow Day. I recently taught a printmaking workshop to juniors and seniors in North Stonington High School.

How do you go about defining yourself?

Let’s start by looking at someone we REALLY know…

What would Homer

Simpson paint?

Of course A DONUT (or duff beer but we’ll go with the donut for now)

But how would he actually paint the donut? He’d have a style that described his energy.

Maybe a little hap hazard ,a little out of control ….

It’s easy to know what Homer would paint .He’s not a complicated character . When it comes to ourselves it’s harder to know how to represent the world. So much of our lives are bombarded with images and fads that are truly very likable but trends can influence us to the extent that we copy them.It’s ok if they Inform our art but otherwise we have to create something just about how we see the world. A good place to start is your bedroom.

This is the real and painted image of Vincent Van Gogh’s bedroom. Draw your room -but before you do,look around, what do you love? Make that image (or dream) the focus of your drawing. What are your colors?

Here is a painter who plays with space. He draws the viewer into the room by placing the teapot lamp in the foreground. Playing with reality is fun. Create your own distorted room and place an object in it that you can’t live without!

This is a painting by a guy who hardly ever came out of his room. His name is Albert Pinkham Ryder. He played with the foreground too. What’s that …doesn’t look like a lamp?

He painted over and over the same painting, at times  building up the thick undercoat. If you want to build up your own painting without spending tons of money on paint.

you can get some thick matte medium and slather away .Let it dry for a day before painting on top. It gives a wonderful texture.
