This is how I get many of my project ideas to send out to various magazines and newspapers. I read the article or review and sketch right on the words . The first idea is usually the best . I take it to the next step usually etching it on copper and aquatinting before printing. I have posted some recent images.

seal sighting was sad and exciting

Was walking on the beach with my friend Richard when we nearly walked into what looked like a baby seal. It was alive but didn’t attempt to get away from us. We stayed with it (boy was it cold) and rainy. We called 311 and there actually is a hot line for wild animals in distress. I was asked to take a picture and email it back to the woman on the line. she looked at the pic and said the seal was actually a yearling and could be just waiting out a “molting period” i had to describe it’s movements and reactions to her. The GPS on the phone gave it’s exact location (Rockaway beach 95th street) and voila it was on the radar and we said (sadly) goodbye.

Lately I’ve been working with collage and etching techniques. Some of the collages are scanned in and some are stored in plastic containers. When I think about an illustration idea I sketch it out before I go to my “library” of collage pieces. You don’t have to save everything just what you can’t possibly part with . More later…

This illustration is about sadness and relief afterward. The process is collage in photoshop ,printed on transparency,exposed in a dark room onto a copper plate (which has been covered with photo emulsion. The exact process can be found by visiting cape fear press.
